How readiness develops over time
Nobody starts coaching with all these qualities fully developed. Elowen Thackeray
came to us after years in human resources, convinced her experience meant she was
ready. Three weeks into the program, she realized she'd been solving problems for
people rather than helping them find their own answers.
The shift happened during a practice session. Her partner mentioned feeling stuck in
a career decision, and Elowen immediately launched into advice about networking
strategies. Her supervisor stopped the session. "What did they actually say they
wanted?" Elowen couldn't answer. She'd been so focused on having the solution that she
hadn't heard the question.
Building the foundation through practice
The program doesn't just teach theory. You spend hours in observed practice sessions,
receiving feedback on patterns you can't see yourself. Desmond Quillan, who joined us
in 2023, recorded his early sessions and was shocked by how often he interrupted. He
thought he was being engaged. The recordings showed him talking over moments where
clients were about to say something important.
He week 7 started
timing his questions—forcing himself to wait five full seconds before speaking. It
felt excruciating at first. By month three, those pauses had become natural, and his
clients were reaching insights he would have accidentally prevented with premature
input.
